Can Your Diet Threaten Your Marriage?

Warmer weather is upon us, which means that many people are looking to shed their winter weight and get beach-body ready. However, in your quest to lose inches, be careful that you don’t also lose your temper with your spouse.

A new study from Ohio State University has found that people with low blood sugar levels are more likely to be irritable and angry with their spouse. They are also more likely to lash out aggressively.

In the study, researchers asked married couples to rate their relationship satisfaction. They then gave each person a voodoo doll that they said represented their partner. At the end of the day, the researchers asked the participants to stick pins in their voodoo doll based on how angry they felt with their spouse that day. The participants with the lowest blood glucose levels stuck more pins in their “spouse” than participants with higher glucose levels.

It’s easy to understand why crashing blood sugar can do a number on your mood. It’s what many people amusingly refer to as feeling “hangry,” a condition when your hunger leads you to feel frustrated and angry for no good reason. Suddenly, even the most minor thing your partner does (such as chewing his gum too loudly or clearing his throat) can have you on edge.

So what’s the solution? Should you reach for the pint of Ben and Jerry’s in order to save your marriage?

Not exactly. Overindulging isn’t the answer either, and frankly, taking care of your physical appearance can do wonders for your marriage. Not only will it make you look and feel your best, but it will also help to keep your sexual health intact. 

A better solution is to practice moderation and to make healthy choices as a couple. If your partner is ordering pizza for dinner while you are eating a dry chicken breast, it’s going to be very hard to feel pleasant towards him. However, if you both prepare a nutritious yet tasty meal and enjoy the sensual pleasures of cooking and eating together, you will not only feel physically satisfied, but emotionally bonded as well.

Also, make sure not to let yourself get “hangry” by packing light, healthy snacks in your car or briefcase. Nuts, fruit, and string cheese are great on-the-go options that can keep low blood sugar and an irritable mood at bay. And don’t forget exercise! Nothing is better for your waistline or your mood than getting active and sweating at least once a day…even if it’s just in the bedroom!
